In 1977 when he released Star Wars, it took the world by storm. Even though it was difficult to get this project picked up, he managed to get it produced. In fact, he was able to negotiate the merchandising rights without much of a flop, because there was such low expectations for the film. Harrison fordThis was during a time when people were looking for the next great science fiction movie, and that is exactly what George delivered. After this great success, George Lucas decided to start up Lucasfilms as his production company. Over the years as Star Wars continued to be successful, the worth of Lucasfilms grew as well. This growth was in spite of the fact that many of Lucas' films outside of the Star Wars saga were below the bar that viewers had set. Films such as More American Graffiti, Howard the Duck, and Willow. However, Lucasfilms successes will always outweigh its failures. A subdivision of Lucasfilms was its animation department called Pixar, which had groundbreaking animation featured in several of the Lucasfilms projects. Pixar was later bought out by Steve Jobs and turned into the gold standard of all animation. Another subdivision was LucasArts, which is most notorious for bringing us Star Wars video games. However, they also gave us Mercenaries and countless other great non Star Wars affiliated games. Unfortunately, LucasArts was shut down in April of 2013 with several promising projects on the horizon. Here is a gameplay for the nearly finished Battlefront 3 that was cut with the rest of LucasArts.
The biggest news surrounding Lucasfilms now was that it was recently acquired by the entertainment mogul, The Walt Disney Company. George Lucas sold Lucasfilms in fall of 2012 to Disney for and estimated $4.05 billion. With this acquisition came the news that in 2015 a new Star Wars movie would be released. This news also lead to the creation of this blog and my eventual 'A' in English IV second semester. Lucasfilms has received the upstart jolt it needed through this new ownership and will surely flourish similar to the years it had in the early 80's with George. Keep your eyes peeled for some great new projects and information coming out of this company soon.
